What does the Atheist label tell us? | Washington Times Communities

10 February 2012 - How sad it is that we humans are constantly at odds with one another because of the unimportant labels we use to describe one another. It is time that we start concentrating on important things and stop trying to put subjective connotations on labels which imply things that concepts don't implicitly mean?

Atheism as a label does not mean anything beyond "I do not believe in god." Sam Harris, in explaining the true meaning of  Atheism, said, “In fact, ’atheism‘ is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a ’non-astrologer‘ or a ’non-alchemist.’ We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs.” ...

An excellent Article. The word atheist was and is used as a pejorative. Other words of identity, such as, unbeliever, truth seeker, skeptic and others are all negative in concept. Perhaps, it is time to examine what, is an Atheist. It is not a political or economic standing. To be an Atheist is not to be a Marxist, Communist or Socialist or Capitalist or American. Perhaps Atheism is more then that. Perhaps, Atheism goes to the essence of human life. Perhaps it is a statement of the individual, of the human capacity to reason. Perhaps, it speaks to individual strength and character absent the intimidations, of government; whether church or state. Atheism, I think, is a positive cloaked in the trappings of a negative.
